Male newborn, since birth increased (mainly bilious) vomiting, oral nutrition not possible. Abdomen was soft.

Pediatric Radiology CasesPathomorphology or Pathophysiology of this disease :

Rotation of the small intestines around the small mesenterial root, mostly in malrotation (also in this case).

     Pediatric Radiology CasesRadiological findings:

    Ultrasound 1 <- view Ultrasound 1

Ultrasound 1: There is a bulls-eye structure in the epigastrium (B-image)

    Ultrasound 2 <- view Ultrasound 2

Ultrasound 2: After turning on the colored doppler, there is a spiral-shaped vessel within the bulls-eye structure, which is rotated around the superior mesenteric artery. It is the mesenteric vein ("whirlpool sign").

(The superior mesenteric artery is therefore not able to be found on the right side of the superior mesenteric artery, but rather through the rotation of the mesenterial root, it lies on the left side)

    Small bowel volvulus:  volvulus
    (Mirta G Luna | 11.08.09)

the knowledge of the whirlpool sign in midgut volvulus is very usefull, but in several cases is dificult to visualize whith gastroduoedenal distention .Then, the upper GI series is mandatory.

      Small bowel volvulus:  Midgut volvulus
      (Wael Nemattalla | 04.05.09)

Malrotation leads to short mesentery resulting in midgut volvulus around axis of SMA with whirlpool sign. Upper GI series findings of volvulus include: spiraling of duodenum; right-sided duodeno- jejunal junction and high-riding cecum. The midgut is that part suppled by SMA.

Small bowel volvulus:  16 YEAR OLD
        (CINDY | 29.04.04)

MY DAUGHTER JUST HAD AN OPERATION FOR MALROTATION OF THE MUDGUT. WE HAD NO IDEA SHE HAD THIS PROBLEM. PLEASE E-MAIL WITH ANY INFO. YOU MIGHT HAVE.. THANK YOU

          Dünndarmvolvulus:  Dünndarmvolvulus - Malrotation ?
          (Hirsch | 09.06.02)

            MfG L.Bauer
