    Cephalhematoma, calcified:  Caput succedaneum
    (Wael Nemattalla | 27.04.09)

Caput succedaneum is a diffuse swelling of the scalp in a newborn caused by pressure from the uterus or vaginal wall during a head-first (vertex) delivery. Caput succedaneum extends across the midline and over suture lines. Cephalhematoma is subperiosteal and is the counterpart of epidural hematoma intra-cranially. It does not cross suture lines.

Cephalhematoma, calcified:  Complete Calcification of two Cephalhematoma's!!
      (Isabelle Bailey | 18.04.08)

Please help me. My daughter was born with two cephalhematoma's at the top of her head. She is now 7 months old and her body hasn't obsorbed any of the blood! It has completely calcified. We have seen 2 pediatricians and are now being refered to a Neurosurgeon. Because she is very bright and has no developmental problems she is not a priority and our we are unable to get an appointment until 2009! At this point is this just going to be a "cosmetic" problem. We are will to travel ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD to see someone who has seen this before. PLEASE REPLY

how can you tell the severity of the damage?

          X-Ray: Cephalhematoma, calcified
          (Kathy | 08.01.05)

I was glad to find your site. My grandson was very badly injured in birth. He had a large lump on the back right side of his head and lots of bruicing due to a vacuum delivery. The bruicing fanned out from the suction spot to the botom of his cheek on the right side. We have also learned that his nose had been broken during delivery. Since 2 months of age he has suffered from severe multiple seizures. He's been put on anti seizure medication which seems to do nothing to help control the seizures. We've been told he has Sturge Weber Syndrom because of the calcification they found. I had asked the doctors about cephalhematoma finding it when looking up information on vacuum deliverys and birth trauma. The doctors informed us that there would be no calcification associated with
cephalhematoma. He's now 17 months old and my daughter is slowly taking him off his anti seizure medication because the side effects from these drugs were affecting his liver. Along with the medication we have introduced natural care and find this is helping to reduce the number of seizures and there not so severe. Since his birth the red mark on his face as fade from a dark purple to a deep pink and has reduced in size by a good 1/3.

            Cephalhematoma, calcified:  query regarding cephalhematoma
            (Dr. Abhishek Arora | 14.12.04)

i recently got a case of a child 20 days old with a parietal swelling on the right side. On CT scans there was a dense calcification noted surrounding the swelling.... Now, my question is .... Is it possible for cephalhematoma to have occured in utero, otherwise i cannot explain the dense calcification of cephalhematoma within twenty days of birth. do reply.

Is there a printed article that cephalhematoma is common among babies born of mothers who are carriers of Hemophilia B genes?

re: X-Ray: Cephalhematoma, calcified - article
                    (Roland Talanow | 03.05.04)

                    Dear Adji,
there is an article from last year:

Goldman RD, Blanchette V, Koren G.
                    Hemophilia during pregnancy.
                    Can Fam Physician. 2003 Dec;49:1601-3.

                    ...and another article from 1999:

                    Kulkarni R, Lusher JM.
Intracranial and extracranial hemorrhages in newborns with hemophilia: a review of the literature.
                    J Pediatr Hematol Oncol. 1999 Jul-Aug;21(4):289-95.

I hope this will help you...

                    Best regards,
                    Roland Talanow
